Sims 4 Build Mode Cheats

Four cheats do almost all of the work in build mode, and together they turn a constrained catalogue into an open one. This page has those four, the two that matter for screenshots, and what each one actually changes.

All of them need testingcheats true first, and all of them last until you leave to the main menu.

bb.moveobjects lets you place objects where Sims cannot reach them. Anything a Sim needs to use — beds, doors, toilets — should be placed with it switched off, or checked afterwards.

Move Objects, and What It Breaks

bb.moveobjects on removes the placement grid and the collision rules with it. Objects can overlap, sit half inside a wall, or float. It is the single cheat that separates a default-looking build from a designed one, and almost every build you have admired online used it.

Two keyboard controls only work while it is on. The 9 and 0 keys raise and lower the selected object in small steps, which is how objects end up on top of shelves and inside cabinets. Holding Alt while dragging frees the object from the grid rotation, letting it sit at any angle.

The cost is that the game stops checking whether a Sim can actually use what you placed. A bed clipped into a wall is still a bed as far as build mode is concerned, and a Sim will simply refuse to sleep in it with no explanation. The rule that keeps builds working is to place functional objects normally and use moveobjects for the decoration around them.

The Two Hidden Catalogues and Locked Lots

bb.showhiddenobjects is usually called the debug cheat. It adds several hundred items the catalogue normally hides — plants, rubble, food props, collectibles, small clutter that exists in the world but was never made purchasable. After running it, search the build catalogue for "debug" to see only the newly added set rather than hunting through everything.

bb.showliveeditobjects adds a second and larger group: world set dressing, the big props used to decorate neighbourhoods rather than lots. There is some overlap with the first cheat but plenty that only appears with this one.

bb.ignoregameplayunlocksentitlement is the third catalogue cheat and works differently. It does not add hidden objects; it unlocks the ones already visible but locked behind career progress, making them buyable at their normal price.

bb.enablefreebuild is about lots rather than objects. It lets you edit lots the game refuses to open in build mode, including venues and the special lots attached to certain packs. Use it carefully — some of those lots are locked because their scripted behaviour depends on what is on them.

The last one is only for screenshots. hovereffects off removes the highlight that appears when the cursor passes over an object, which is otherwise impossible to keep out of a clean build photograph.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the move objects cheat in The Sims 4?

bb.moveobjects on, entered after testingcheats true. It removes placement and collision rules so objects can overlap, clip and sit off the grid. Turn it off again with bb.moveobjects off.

How do I raise and lower objects?

With bb.moveobjects on, select the object and use the 9 and 0 keys to move it up and down in small steps. Holding Alt while dragging frees it from grid rotation.

What is the debug cheat in The Sims 4?

bb.showhiddenobjects. It adds hundreds of normally unbuyable items to the catalogue. Search for "debug" in build mode afterwards to filter down to just those items.

How do I unlock career reward objects?

bb.ignoregameplayunlocksentitlement makes every career-locked object purchasable at its normal price. It does not make them free.

Why can my Sim not use an object I placed?

Because bb.moveobjects turns off the check that an object is reachable. Anything a Sim interacts with should be placed with the cheat off, or moved back into a legal position afterwards.
