How to Change Your Fortnite Name

  1. Copy a style

    Type your name above and copy a version between three and sixteen characters. Lettering styles pass Epic’s filter far more often than heavily framed ones.

  2. Sign in to your Epic account

    Go to epicgames.com and sign in, then open Account Settings. The display name is changed on the account, not inside the game, so this is the same route on PC, console and mobile.

  3. Edit the display name

    Under Account Info, click the pencil icon beside your display name. If the icon is missing, verify the email address on the account — the control stays hidden until you do.

  4. Confirm the change

    Paste the new name, wait for Epic to check it is available, tick the box acknowledging the 14-day cooldown, enter your password and save. The change applies across every Epic service straight away.

What a Fortnite Name Change Costs

Nothing. Epic does not charge for a display-name change, and never has — anything asking for payment or account details in exchange for one is not Epic.

What it costs is time. Every successful change starts a 14-day cooldown, and there is no way around it: Player Support cannot lift the wait, and the edit control simply shows a lock until the fortnight is up. A name typed in a hurry is a name you keep for two weeks.

Your progress is untouched by the change. Stats, achievements, V-Bucks and everything in your locker stay attached to the account, which is identified by the account itself rather than the name printed on it.

One requirement catches people out: the pencil icon beside the display name does not appear until the email address on the account has been verified. If the control is missing rather than locked, that is what to check first.

Which Symbols Fortnite Accepts

Epic’s display name rules are built around letters, numbers, the underscore and the hyphen. Emoji are refused outright, as are names made only of a repeated character, and the filter rejects profanity and anything that reads as impersonation.

Decorative Unicode is a grey area rather than a flat no. Lighter glyphs and stylised letterforms frequently pass, while stacked symbols and look-alike characters that could be used to impersonate another player are commonly refused. Epic does not publish the exact list, so the honest answer is that a stylish name may or may not go through.

Given the two-week cooldown, that argues for a specific order of operations: try the style you actually want first, and if Epic refuses it, fall back to a plainer lettering version of the same name. The refusal happens at the availability check, before the change is applied, so a rejected attempt does not burn your fortnight.

Display names must also be unique across Epic, which is the other common reason a name comes back refused.
